Have you ever noticed that when we focus on the negative, it can put us in a bad mood?
Often when my husband and I are in the car together, we get home and he gets out of the car and goes straight inside without waiting for me. I started noticing this one day, then I noticed it more and more. It began to put me in a bad mood every time we got home.
I didn’t mention it, so when my mood changed from normal to grumpy, he didn’t even know why. I finally couldn’t hold it in any longer and asked him why he did that. He said “I go in ahead of you to calm the dogs from their barking.”
To his credit, they do go a little nuts when we pull into the driveway.
What would happen if instead of letting that get under my skin, I focused on what a kind person he is or how sweet he is to his mother? How he fills my car with gas when he drives it or how he sits through a chick flick just to spend time with me?
Thinking about these things, just typing them, makes me feel good! I think that’s why God tells us in His word to do just that – think of things that are excellent and praiseworthy.
“Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” — Philippians 4:8
God tells us to think of these things because He knows the impact it makes. Start looking for those things in your life to praise. You’ll be less annoyed, and more grateful.
