Every year for 38 years I’ve made a birthday cake for my wife Lois. She is a fabulous cook and it is literally the ONLY thing I make in the kitchen. But, amazingly, they have all turned out pretty good. That all changed this year.

I commissioned help from our 4-year-old grandson, Owen, and I can’t even blame him for the debacle! He was nowhere in the area when I dropped one of the cake-filled pans on the floor. It turned into one laugh after the next (and a few tears from his pinched finger in the mixing bowl – nothing serious) as we pushed ahead to complete our project and give Granny “The Best Cake Ever”!

It actually tasted better than it looked! And it made for some great memories. It also served as a reminder. It’s not always the finished product as much as the journey, and the relationships built. We look forward to next year!
