Outside my house in Chandler is a beautiful purple butterfly plant. I planted it this past spring, it’s been in bloom for months and the other day one of the prettiest butterflies came to visit it.

As I watched it sip the flowers I remember the quote from Walt Disney, “ If nothing changed, there would be no butterflies.”

It made me think of my life as it relates to the morphing of a caterpillar to a butterfly. The caterpillar lives its short life, then everything suddenly changes for her. She is encased in a chrysalis hidden in the darkness of her own protective pod. Days pass and although no one can see her morphing, she has become what she was always meant to be. She still has to fight her way out of the cloaking.

The very effort of the fight to complete her change is required for her to be the strong beautiful butterfly.

For many people, this year has been filled with major changes: births, deaths, struggles and joys and sadness. All of it changes or morphs us to move us toward the beautiful being that God is completing in us. Even the very struggle itself is necessary to be what we can become.

So, if this year has meant change for you, don’t believe that it is as it will always be because the beauty at the end of the change is how the butterfly becomes strong enough to fly.

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. – James 1:2-4
