The Power of Words

Do you want to be a wise woman who uses her words to build up those who listen? It’s so easy to fall into that trap of tearing people down. Without realizing it sometimes, or maybe even intentionally, we criticize and judge others.

Wendy Pope shared a Proverbs 31 lesson that hits home with many of us. She says, “My mouth has always gotten me in trouble. You might say I am ‘quick to speak, slow to think.’ I don’t mean to hurt anyone. I mean, it’s not really gossip, is it? It’s is only harmless sharing … really. I’m concerned about her and I’m just sharing those concerns. It’s just girlfriends talking… right?”

Well, how would you justify it when the person you’re criticizing or gossiping about overhears you? That happened to Wendy and she felt her stomach sink when she realized it! It was hard lesson learned and she reminds us of the words in Ephesians 4:29: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up…”

Her potentially damaging conversation made her realize the power of words to hurt or to help.

How will you use your words today?
