We’ve all had those feelings of jealousy while scrolling through Facebook, Instagram, or any other social media platform, where friends are posting pictures of lounging at the beach or that new car they just bought.

For me, it was Steve and Kelly, friends of ours who were always on some spontaneous adventure. They seem to constantly be doing something super exciting, and all the while I’m working, or cleaning out my refrigerator. I actually caught myself complaining about their posts the other day.

“Why do they have to brag about everything they do? Like anyone cares how much fun they are having!”

“Jealous much?” I thought to myself. It turns out envy on social media stems from comparison we make between ourselves and “friends” or even acquaintances we have.

The Bible talks about comparison!

Did you know it’s actually biblical to not compare yourself to others? Yep, it’s right there in 2nd Corinthians:

“We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.” — 2 Corinthians 10:12

Comparison actually makes us unwise, according to the Bible. Trying to measure up always leaves us falling short. It makes sense if you think about it. How does comparison usually leave you feeling? Yep, me too…inadequate.

The good news is that God has a different path and plan for each of our lives. We need to be wise so we can clearly see the plan God is unfolding for us. That may mean taking a break from social media, or maybe just staying in His word and close to His truths. The more time you spend doing that, the more you’ll see God’s image of you.
