Here’s to the Good Guys

Being a “good guy” isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. And it’s harder than it looks.

1. Good in whose opinion?

2. Good compared to what?

My mom used to say “Stay in church and stay out of jail.”

Technically she was right. If you literally stay anywhere besides jail, you’re not in jail. But her point is well-taken. Surround yourself with good things and some of it will rub off. The opposite is also true.

We know this from experience.

Remember the “wrong crowd”? These were the people your mother warned you about. Or, (and nobody wants to acknowledge this), perhaps YOU were the wrong crowd.

Nobody is all good and nobody is all bad, but we all lean one way or another at any given time. So how do we at least stay above 50% good? How can we possibly keep ourselves consistently out of the red on the “good/bad” meter?

We can’t. And trying can be exhausting.

But there’s hope! We have within our reach a “one-stop shop” to keep ourselves in a “good” place. If we make ourselves available, we can finally have peace in our imperfection.

You know where I’m going don’t you?

  • Romans 3:10 says “There is no one righteous.”
  • Psalm 14:3 says “Everyone has turned away.
  • Mark 10:18 “No one is good except God alone.”

The bad news: We can never be fully good. But the good news? (The best news ever!)

When we fully surrender to God, 2 Corinthians 3:18 says

“…our lives gradually become brighter and more beautiful as God enters our lives and we become more like Him.”

2 Corinthians 3:18

He becomes “the good crowd” our moms wanted us to hang around! We actually become more like God! It doesn’t get any better than that!

So while we may be “no good,” but we can definitely “know Good”!

Mom would be proud.
