It’s a bird — it’s a plane — it’s SUPERMAN!

Yes, it’s Superman. Strange visitor from another planet with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men. Superman! Who can change the course of mighty rivers and bend steel in his bare hands. And who, disguised as Clark Kent, a mild-mannered reporter from a great metropolitan newspaper, fights a never-ending battle for truth, justice, and the American way!

The opening to that iconic TV show is engrained in my memory. And thinking back on it, it’s easy to pass it off as a fantasy program that has no connection to reality.

In the literal sense, that’s true.

But, if you’ll take a moment and enlarge your thinking, you and I could actually be a Superman or a Supergirl!

The Bible says we can do all things through Christ. And while technically none of us is faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, or even able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, we can do the seemingly impossible.

Galatians 5:22-23 says

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Ever try to love a mean or annoying person in your own strength? You can fake it for a while, but we can’t do it for the long haul. Or what about holding on to joy in the midst of a tragedy? And how’s your patience when you’re tired?

Go down the list, and check your score against these fruits of the spirit. These traits are what we exude when we have God in our hearts. If we’re struggling in any of these areas, there’s a good chance we haven’t fully committed it to Him. At least not lately.

Do you know anybody who just seems to have it together? You’ve never seen them snap, or show a critical attitude? Nobody’s on all the time. We all have our moments. But maybe you’ve never seen him or her show any sign of selfishness, rudeness, or bitterness. As far as you’ve experienced, this person is consistently patient, positive, and wise?

That doesn’t happen by itself.

What you’re witnessing is God in their hearts. The Holy Spirit is what directs them, and you’re witnessing the fruit. And that only happens with a person who is fully surrendered to Him, and daily makes a priority of pouring into the Bible and prayer.

I know some people like this and I’m inspired by them.

I see the results of their dedication and devotion. And I know anything short of God’s help keeps me from attaining anywhere close to that level of unconditional love and light.

It really is “Super-Human”!
